New California law reforms certification requirements for orthodontic assistants: 3 notes

A new California law that removes barriers to becoming an orthodontic assistant was recently passed.

Three notes:

1. The bill aims to remove excessive testing and work experience requirements for orthodontic assistant permit certification, the American Association of Orthodontists said Nov. 20.

2. The bill was removed during early discussions after facing opposition from the California Dental Assisting Alliance, but was reintroduced in 2024.

3. The AAO said the new law will help alleviate workforce staffing issues in the state.
