Florida governor signs bill updating the dental claims process

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis recently signed 10 bills, including one to make changes to the dental insurance claims process in the state.

Gov. DeSantis signed Senate Bill 892: Dental Insurance Claims on May 17, according to a May 19 news release. 

Here are the updates to the insurance process from SB 892:

  • Prohibits contracts between insurers and dentists from having restrictions on certain payment methods. 
  • Prohibits insurers from charging a fee to send payment through Automated Clearing House transfer unless the dentist consents to the fee. 
  • Prohibits insurers from denying claims for procedures included in a prior authorization.
  • Prohibits a contract between a prepaid limited health services organization and a dentist that contains certain restrictions on payment methods and other areas.

The bill is effective Jan. 1, 2025.
