9 state dental societies introduce dental loss ratio legislation in 2024

Dental societies in nine states have introduced legislation in 2024 to implement a dental loss ratio.

So far, societies in Illinois, Nebraska, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia have introduced legislation, according to a Jan. 26 news release from the American Dental Association.

Dental loss ratios place limits on insurers to ensure that a certain percentage of premiums goes toward patient care instead of being spent on operating and administrative costs.

Arizona, Colorado and Nevada all adopted dental loss ratio legislation in 2023, while New Mexico adopted legislation in 2022.

In addition, the National Council of Insurance Legislators voted to pass model dental loss ratio legislation at the Health Insurance and Long Term Care Issues Committee meeting Jan. 26, the release said.
