NYU College of Dentistry Dean Dr. Charles Bertolami on adapting to the pandemic

Charles Bertolami, DDS, dean of New York City-based NYU College of Dentistry, shared insights from his career, leadership advice and how he tackled the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic on "Becker's Dental + DSO Podcast."

New York City was hit hard at the start of the pandemic, closing NYU Dentistry for about four months, Dr. Bertolami said. NYU Dentistry has a large patient base, and now it's at 60 percent of its usual patient volume.

Here are three effects he discussed:

1. Emphasis on personal protective equipment and social distancing: Dr. Bertolami said the early effect of the pandemic made messaging around social distancing and personal protective equipment stick. NYU Dental was able to get the necessary PPE materials while also donating to hospitals.

2. Early immunizations: Faculty, staff and students were able to get early immunizations, and many are getting their second shot.

3. Facility upgrades: High-speed elevators were installed to reduce crowding, and the facility was also able to replace all of its sterilizer units.
