MB2 Dental and Dental Care Alliance are two of the largest DSOs in the U.S. that have made notable progress in their expansion efforts in recent years.
Both DSOs hit practice milestones in 2023 and now represent more than 1,000 offices combined.
Here is how each DSO achieved their milestones:
MB2 Dental (Dallas)
MB2 Dental opened its 600th practice in August. The company was able to reach the milestone through a combination of practice affiliations and de novo practices.
In February, Founder and CEO Chris Villanueva, DMD, told Becker's that about 40 or 50 percent of the DSO's recent partners came from internal referrals. He noted how the company focuses on partnering with owners who are motivated to continue operating and said the organization plans to build out relationships between general practitioners and specialists within its network.
The dental partnership organization started 2023 with more than 500 practices and went on to add 70 partner practices and three de novo locations during the first half of the year. The company went on to secure a delayed-draw term loan of $150 million and raised $20 million through an internal investment fundraiser from its doctor partners. The company used the funds to continue expanding its network through acquisitions.
Dental Care Alliance (Sarasota, Fla.)
Dental Care Alliance surpassed 400 practices in March. The DSO reached this milestone after experiencing one of its most successful years in 2022.
In 2022, Dental Care Alliance focused on specialty services, recruitment and investing in new technology. It expanded its footprint in Michigan, Florida, Virginia, Texas and New York, while also entering Tennessee. The DSO added key execs to support the company's growth, including Chief Development Officer Christine Heald and Chief Growth Officer David Pegg.
The DSO started 2023 by being acquired by Mubadala Investment Co., a sovereign investor based in the United Arab Emirates. The DSO made several practice affiliations and opened de novo offices this year, growing its footprint in Wisconsin, Georgia, Delaware, Virginia, Massachusetts, Illinois, New Jersey and Arizona. It also added its first office in Rhode Island.
