A number of new laws recently passed in California affecting the dental industry will go into effect Jan. 1, 2025, according to an Oct. 10 news release from the California Dental Association.
Here are 10 things to know:
1. Pediatric dentists will be able to use their pediatric residencies to qualify for adult minimal sedation permits.
2. Dentists that have a general anesthesia permit will be required to complete advanced cardiovascular life support training during each renewal period, on top of the basic life support requirements for their dental license.
3. Dentists licensed in another state and practicing non-clinically for a specified time in a role that requires a dental license will be eligible to apply for a dental license in California through the licensure by credential pathway.
4. Continuing education courses on the topics of mental health and wellness, or diversity, equity and inclusion will qualify as core continuing education.
5. Dental practices with a fictitious name permit will not need an owner's family name in the practice name, but will be required to contain "dental group, practice, office or corporation."
6. The licenses and permits for all licensed dental professionals and certificates of board-approved radiation safety and coronal polishing courses for unlicensed dental assistants must be publicly displayed in the practice.
7. Unlicensed dental assistants will be required to complete an infection-control course before exposure to blood and saliva.
8. Unlicensed dental assistants who complete a board-approved course will be allowed to perform coronal polishing while under direct supervision.
9. Program directors can decide whether to continue providing instruction on film radiography or switch exclusively to teaching digital X-rays.
10. Registered dental assistants in extended functions who pass the necessary course will be able to take radiographs for patients not previously seen by the dentist and perform interim therapeutic restorations.
