The North Carolina Board of Dental Examiners is receiving more complaints concerning veneer technicians providing dental services, according to a Sept. 19 report by WCCB Charlotte.
Veneer technicians are not licensed to perform dental work, and technicians that do perform dental services on patients are practicing unlicensed dentistry. Techs usually take a short class to receive a certificate of completion, but this does not permit them to legally place veneers on patients.
Bobby White, CEO of the dental board, said that the board has filed at least 12 injunctions in the past year and a half against individuals who are accused of practicing dentistry without a license.
The North Carolina dental board does not issue fines for the practice and instead just orders the individual to stop performing dental services.
In addition to an increase in veneer technicians, the board has also seen an uptick in reports of unlicensed dentists installing braces, the report said.
The American Dental Association issued a warning against visiting veneer technicians earlier this year.
