Patients of suspended dentist urged to get tested for HIV, hepatitis

The Spokane Regional Health District and Washington State Department of Health are advising patients of a local dental clinic to get tested due to potential infection control allegations.

Patients of Deer Park (Wash.) Dental Clinic who received care from Sandy Montano, DDS, between November 2021 and June 2022 should get tested for viral hepatitis and HIV, according to a Sept. 18 news release from the health district.

The health department suspended Dr. Montano's license in June 2022 and indefinitely suspended his license in April 2024 over infection control allegations.

The potential breaches include improper cleaning and disinfection of reusable equipment, as well as improper reuse of disposable equipment, which could expose patients to blood and other infectious material.

No disease transmission has been identified, and the risk of contracting a disease is believed to be low, the release said.
