Kentucky dentist arrested in murder case allowed to continue practicing

A Kentucky dentist who was recently arrested in connection with a 2023 murder has been authorized to continue practicing dentistry, Mountain Top Media reported Sept. 18.

Michael McKinney Jr., DMD, is the owner of Floyd County Smiles in Minnie and Prestonsburg, Ky. He was arrested July 30 and faces charges of complicity to tampering with physical evidence in connection to the 2023 murder of Amber Spradlin. Dr. McKinney has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Kentucky Board of Dentistry issued an immediate temporary suspension of Dr. McKinney's license in August while it investigated the dentist's "competency to practice." During the suspension, Dr. McKinney was approved by a judge to continue managing the practice.

The state dental board lifted the temporary license suspension Sept. 18., allowing him to practice with the provision that he returns home by 5 p.m. each day per a court order. The board said it may reconsider the suspension if new charges are filed or if Dr. McKinney violates the conditions of his release.
