Loma Linda (Calif.) University School of Dentistry received a $4 million grant to develop a biomarker using artificial intelligence to identify patients with the highest risk of developing oral cancer.
The research will be focused on the progression of oral pre-cancer to oral cancer and the potential use of AI to create a multi-omic biomarker to point out individuals with oral pre-cancer that may progress into oral cancer, according to a July 1 news release.
Chi Viet, DDS, MD, PhD, is an associate professor and attending surgeon in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery and the principal investigator for the grant.
Dr. Viet and her research team have established a program that studies potential treatment options for patients with oral cancer. Her research uses a patient's molecular signature to identify oral cancer progression.
The grant is from the National Cancer Institute and is the university's second $4 million grant to study oral cancer in the past two years, the release said.
