Woodbury (Minn.) Dental Arts, which abruptly closed, was forced to do so after the owner had his dental license suspended and ran out of money, according to a March 7 report by ABC affiliate KSTP.
The practice was suddenly shut down, leaving patients who paid $30,000 for dental implants searching for answers.
Marko Kamel, DDS, the owner and a dentist at the practice, said he was forced to close because his license was suspended and he did not have the money to continue running the practice.
"I ran out of money to run the practice without being able to practice myself anymore," said Dr. Kamel.
Dr. Kamel said he did not notify patients of the closure because he closed the office when you could not support the payroll.
The Minnesota Board of Dentistry has suspended Dr. Kamel's license on two separate occasions for incompetence, most recently in November.
Dr. Kamel is in the process of selling the practice, with employees and patients first on the list to be reimbursed. He hopes to complete the sale within the next couple of weeks, according to the report.
In addition, Dr. Kamel is getting referrals from other dentists in the area so patients can continue treatment, the report said.
