5 federal government, policy updates for dentists to know

Here are five federal updates dental leaders should know:

1. The American Dental Association filed an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court asking justices to review a decision related to the broad application of ERISA preemption of state statutes concerning self-funded healthcare plans.

2. Two physicians and two dentists testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions about how to improve dental care affordability and accessibility.

3. FDA documents obtained by KFF News and CBS News reportedly show that the federal agency did not inspect a dental lab manufacturing a dental device that has become the subject of several lawsuits.

4. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued a final rule updating and improving the current Hazard Communication Standard to provide better information on data sheets and labels that might help first responders in case of a workplace emergency.

5. Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced a bill May 17 to expand dental care coverage for veterans and low-income individuals as well as increase the oral healthcare workforce.
