Investment in the oral surgery field has increased in recent years as dental companies see the profitability of the field. 

Here are six notes on the oral surgery field in 2023: 

1. The average annual salary for oral surgeons in the U.S. is $309,410.
2. There are 7,412 oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the U.S.
3. California has 884 active oral surgeons, the most of any state.
4. Investment in the oral surgery field is expected to pick up through the end of 2023 and in 2024 after a decline earlier this year, according to Brian Hamilton, a managing director at investment firm DuneGlass Capital and chief development officer at Allied OMS.
5. Several oral surgery-focused DSOs and MSOs have launched in recent years, including Max Surgical Specialty Management and Allied OMS.
6. Several challenges facing oral surgeons this year include staffing shortages, drug shortages and increased operational costs, according to Jason Auerbach, DDS.
