Here are two recent cybersecurity incidents affecting dental offices that Becker's has reported on since Oct. 16:
- San Antonio-based Henwood Family Dentistry experienced a cybersecurity incident affecting 7,300 people. An investigation determined that an unauthorized third party used a remote-access tool to gain access to one of the practice's desktop computers and accessed the company's network. Personal information that may have been accessed includes identifying information, contact information, health insurance information and information regarding dental care. The practice said it is aware of one patient who has received communications from the unauthorized party. The practice said the incident did not disrupt patient care.
- Fairfax Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, which has six locations in Virginia, experienced a data security incident where certain files on the practice's system were encrypted. The practice's investigation determined that the encrypted files included personal information including name, driver's license number, Social Security number, health insurance information and medical information. The practice is not aware of any instances where any personal data has been misused for committing fraud or identity theft, the post said.
