The New York State Dental Association is continuing to support the addition of fluoride to water to prevent tooth decay, according to an Oct. 17 news release shared with Becker's.
Here are five things to know:
1. In September, a federal judge ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency must address the impact that fluoride has in drinking water in response to a report from the National Toxicology Program.
2. The NYSDA strongly recommends that towns do not change their pro-fluoridation policies over the ruling from a single judge.
3. The ruling did not ban or restrict fluoride in water, and only asked the EPA to review its standards.
4. About 13 million New York residents benefit from water fluoridation.
5. Other organizations, including the American Dental Association, have stuck to their fluoride recommendations in the midst of the ruling.
