The American Dental Association recently released new guidance for capturing and exchanging digital radiographs.
The new standard provides a process for dentists to produce high-quality digital radiographs, according to a Dec. 19 news release.
The ADA said the guidelines were needed because most guidelines provided by states and regulatory bodies relate to X-ray film, despite 90% of dental practices in the U.S. using digital radiography.
The standard is applicable to any digital imaging system and optimizes the radiation dose to ensure quality without subjecting patients to more radiation than necessary.
The ADA also reaffirmed its support of the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine Standard, an international standard for the formatting, storage and exchange of digital radiography files. The standard ensures radiography files are interoperable across all types of systems and makes it easier for dentists to share images and patient data.
