Federal and state health officials began investigating a tuberculosis outbreak in July connected to recalled human bone tissue products sold to hospitals, surgical centers and dental clinics.
The tuberculosis cases are linked to Aziyo Biologics' viable bone matrix products, which were recalled after two patients treated with a viable bone matrix product made from one donor lot contracted tuberculosis. The lot was sent to hospitals, surgical centers and dental clinics across California, Louisiana, Michigan, New York, Oregon, Texas and Virginia.
Here are three updates to know:
- The CDC confirmed to Becker's July 27 that more than two patients have laboratory evidence of tuberculosis from the contaminated lot.
- All 36 patients who were treated with the contaminated lot have been contacted.
- The American Association of Tissue Banks revised its donor screening requirements for tuberculosis Aug. 7.
