How busy have dentists been in the past year?

One-quarter of dentists were too busy to treat all patients that requested care in the past 12 months, according to a survey from the American Dental Association. 

Dentists who treated Medicaid patients were more busy than dentists who did not treat Medicaid beneficiaries, regardless of the type of insurance the patient had.

The percentage of dentists not treating Medicaid patients that could have treated more patients was 13%, more than double the percentage of dentists treating Medicaid patients that had the same level of busyness.

The report polled nearly 1,000 dentists across eight states.

Here is the busyness level among dentists, broken down by dentists who do and do not treat Medicaid patients:

Treated all patients and not overworked: 31%

Not busy enough and could have treated more patients: 9%
