Supply of orthodontists grows 7% since 2019

The number of orthodontists in the U.S. increased from 5,990 in 2019 to 6,400 in 2023, an increase of 6.8%.

California was home to the most orthodontists in 2023 and 2022, Maryland in 2021 and 2020, and Texas in 2019, according to data from the Labor of Bureau Statistics. 

In April 2024, the agency updated the employment figures for 2023. 

Here is the number of orthodontists in the U.S. from 2019 to 2023, along with the state that had the most orthodontists and the state that had the highest concentration of orthodontists:

2019

Total U.S. employment: 5,990

State with the most orthodontists: Texas, 570

State with the highest employment of orthodontists per thousand jobs: Maryland, 0.15

2020

Total U.S. employment: 5,040

State with the most orthodontists: Maryland, 560

State with the highest employment of orthodontists per thousand jobs: Maryland, 0.22

2021

Total U.S. employment: 5,140

State with the most orthodontists: Maryland, 540

State with the highest employment of orthodontists per thousand jobs: Maryland, 0.21

2022

Total U.S. employment: 6,310

State with the most orthodontists: California, 1,120

State with the highest employment of orthodontists per thousand jobs: Maryland, 0.16

2023

Total U.S. employment: 6,400

State with the most orthodontists: California, 1,060

State with the highest employment of orthodontists per thousand jobs: Maine, 0.19
