The American Dental Association is standing firm against direct-to-consumer dentistry following SmileDirectClub's bankruptcy.
The ADA opposes DTC dentistry because of the potential for harm it poses to individuals, who are treated as customers rather than patients under the model, according to a Dec. 12 news release from the ADA.
Without the involvement of a licensed dentist, patients are more vulnerable to potential bone loss, lost teeth, receding gums, bite problems and jaw pain, the ADA contends.
According to many states' laws and the ADA's policy, dentists are the only individuals that are licensed to accept responsibility for patient care.
The ADA advises patients speak with a dentist when considering DTC services or products, the release said.
