A former employee of Frey Orthodontics in Algonquin, Ill., recently received probation after pleading guilty to stealing $35,000 from the practice, the Lake & McHenry County Scanner reported Dec. 2.
Linda Miller, 61, was responsible for managing employee payroll at the practice. According to a complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court, Ms. Miller stole money from the practice from 2016 to 2019 by giving herself unauthorized bonuses and using lines of credit belonging to the practice.
Ms. Miller told investigators that she was paying herself back for overtime and money she spent out of her own pocket that she was not reimbursed for. The complaint stated that the owners did not consent to Ms. Miller's actions.
Ms. Miller was charged in April 2021 with financial institution fraud and theft over $10,000. She later entered a blind plea agreement by pleading guilty to one count of theft between $10,000 and $100,000.
In addition to a two-year probation sentence, Ms. Miller was ordered to pay $35,000 in restitution. She faces a jail sentence of 88 days if she fails to complete her probation, according to court records.
